Pirellis on the pace in Rizla Suzuki test

THE Rizla Suzuki British Superbike team has returned to the Calafat circuit in Spain where Tom Sykes and Atsushi Watanabe spent the first test day of 2008 familiarising themselves with the new Pirelli control tyres.

Although the Pirelli tyres were not to the exact specification and compound as the ones that will be issued once the British Superbike season kicks off, it was a great opportunity for the riders to get a feel for the tyres and understand how they work.

21-year old Sykes from Huddersfield completed a total of 81 laps round the 3.25km track concentrating on the new tyres and some suspension tweaks. His Japanese counterpart, Watanabe worked solely on learning the new control tyres whilst completing a total of 84 laps.

Team Manager Jack Valentine said: Im pleased with how today went. We were working mainly with the tyres and letting the riders get to know them. Tomorrow we will up the pace and start work on the more in-depth test structure. The weather has been near perfect today with clear skies, I am hoping for the same tomorrow.

Reports from each day of testing will appear on www.rizla-suzuki.co.uk.
